Exploring Your Health Insurance Choices Health insurance plans help to pay for your medical expenses as well as your disability or long term nursing requirements. Within the United States, there are three main types of health insurance options. With each of these affordable health insurance choices, the insured group or individual pays premiums or taxes in order to protect themselves from the rising cost of healthcare. Consider each of the options so you can make the right health insurance choice for your needs.
Employer Programs This health insurance choice is completely paid by your employer as a part of your benefits package. Nearly all corporations within the United States offer health insurance options to their employees and nearly 60% of all individuals in the United States receive their health coverage through their employers.
Public Programs The programs often provide the main source of health insurance plans for senior citizens, children and low-income families who meet the necessary eligibility requirements. Consider the four main health insurance options provided by the government in the United States:
1. Medicare - For disabled and senior citizens
2. Medicaid - For children in low income families
3. Children's Health Insurance Program
4. TRICARE - A program for military health benefits
Private Programs About 9% of individuals in the United States buy their own healthcare plans. This is the most expensive option of the three ways you can get health insurance. Within this area, there are two main types to consider managed health care and indemnity health plans. Between these two plans, you have choices to help you find health coverage for a reasonable price and control flexibility when it comes to your medical decisions.

Indemnity is the form of insurance that most people think about when it comes to health insurance options. The insurance company insures you against a specific loss amount and when it happens, they pay you. The amount you receive is known as an indemnity. Indemnity is the most expensive health insurance choice, but they do allow you to go to any doctor or hospital you want. The details and rules of your specific plan will vary depending on the provider, but in general, this type of plan focuses on your freedom to make decisions.

Another option for private health insurance is the HMO or Health Maintenance Organization. With an HMO policy, you are agreeing to use a specific network of doctors and do everything through your Primary Care Physician. If you want to see another doctor, you need to have a referral from your doctor. If you do not get a referral or go to a doctor outside the network, you may not be reimbursed for expenses unless it is considered a medical emergency. HMO plans are appealing to people because they are affordable health insurance choices with low premiums, co-pays and deductibles. The only disadvantage to an HMO plan is that you lose some flexibility, but the cost savings may make up for it.

Lastly, there is the option of the PPO or Preferred Provider Organization. This health insurance choice is a little more expensive than the HMO plan because you get more flexibility. With a PPO plan, you go to a doctor or hospital that is a member of the program and you get a set amount of savings. If you go to someone outside of the network, you will still be reimbursed. Many people prefer the PPO plan because you can choose to see a specialist without a referral. This is often a big factor in people's decision-making process.

Insurance companies can vary slightly in the way they define these three terms, but this is how the policies always work. Often young professionals find the high deductible plans appealing. This way you have a high deductible that helps cover major medical issues and then you can self-insure for any smaller problems you may have. This can save you a lot of money on premiums unless you experience a series of minor medical problems. It may not seem that difficult to choose a health insurance plan, but it is important that you do. You may never need the full extent of their coverage, but if you do need them, it is always a good idea to be prepared for the worst.
